VIT 317 – Carpet Flammability Tester

[product_tags_no_comma_alt]

Application

The Carpet Flammability Tester is used to evaluate the effect of a small ignition source on floor coverings. It can be used for either the Hot Metal Nut Test (BS 4790) or the Methenamine Tablet Test (ISO 6925, BS 6307, and GB/T 11049). This tester assesses the burning behavior of textile floor coverings under controlled laboratory conditions, making it ideal for carpets, mats, and other textile floor coverings.

This equipment is designed for precise testing of carpet flammability under controlled conditions, suitable for carpets made from various fibers and constructions. The test results help assess the carpet’s performance in response to small ignition sources, ensuring compliance with international standards for flame resistance.

Testing Method

  • Hot Metal Nut Method (BS 4790):
A stainless steel nut is heated to 900°C in a muffle furnace. The specimen is placed in the test chamber, and a clamping ring is positioned over it. The heated nut is placed at the center of the ring for 30 seconds. Afterward, the spread of ignition on the sample is measured to evaluate the carpet’s flammability.
  • Methenamine Tablet Method (ISO 6925, BS 6307):
The conditioned specimen is placed in the test chamber, with a metal plate and a circular cut-out placed over it. A methenamine tablet is positioned at the center of the specimen and ignited. The effect of the flame on the carpet is observed and measured after the flame extinguishes.
