Application

The SPI Flammability Tester is designed to determine the ignition properties of vinyl plastic film material, in accordance with CFR 16 Part 1611 of the U.S. Flammable Fabrics Act. It evaluates the flammability of apparel vinyl plastic films by measuring the burning rate when the specimen is exposed to a standardized flame. The burning rate must not exceed 1.2 inches per second, based on the average of five determinations along the length and five across the width of the material.

The SPI Flammability Tester is used for testing vinyl plastic films, including transparent, translucent, and opaque polyethylene films with a thickness of less than or equal to 0.33mm. This standard is essential for ensuring that non-rigid polyethylene films meet the U.S. flame retardancy requirements.

Flammability Requirements for Vinyl Plastic Film

  • The average burning rate for each of the five longitudinal samples and five transverse samples must not exceed 3 cm/s. The test is carried out according to the standardized 45-degree flammability test method, ensuring that the film’s ignition resistance is within the required limits.

Test Procedure

  1. Sample Preparation:
    • Cut the sample according to the specified dimensions. Attach a cotton thread to the clip’s switch trigger, ensuring it is at least 0.25 inches from the edge of the clip. The wire passes through the hole under the upper clip to ensure it clings to the sample when the clip is closed.
  2. Sample Fixing:
    • Insert the sample into the sample clip, ensuring that when the clip is closed, the sample does not wrinkle or deform. The sample should not extend beyond the outer edge of the lower clip to allow smooth movement during the test.
  3. Flame Adjustment and Setup:
    • Set up both electronic switches to prepare for automatic timing. Adjust the flame to 0.5 inches and ensure the ventilator fan is turned off. Zero the timer, and adjust the flame according to the required specifications before closing the test box door.
  4. Testing:
    • Insert the sample clip into the box, positioning it correctly for the burning test. The first timer will automatically start when the sample holder contacts the sensor. The second timer will begin once the first marking line is burned. The timers will stop once the second marking line is burned. Close the gas supply valve and record the time taken. The burning rate is then calculated from the recorded time.
