Application
The Downproof Tester is used to assess the down-proof capability of fabrics intended for down-filled garments, quilts, and other items containing down, feathers, or fibers. A specimen of the fabric is sewn into a pocket, filled with a specified weight of down, feathers, or a combination of both, then sewn up to create a testing bag. The bag is clamped into the holder, and the down-proof ability is evaluated by counting the number of down and feathers that penetrate through the fabric.

Testing Method
Fabric Down-proof Capability Definition
The Downproof Tester evaluates a fabric’s ability to prevent down or feathers from leaking through its surface. This ability is measured by calculating the number of down or feather particles that penetrate the fabric under specified testing conditions.
Test Principle
There are three primary methods for testing fabric down-proof properties: rotating box method, friction method, and impact method. These methods simulate real-world external forces during use, such as compression, friction, and kneading, which can cause down or feathers to puncture the fabric. The number of particles that drill through the fabric surface is used to evaluate the fabric’s down-proof ability.
Friction Method
The friction method involves placing a sample bag filled with down or feather filler into a plastic bag, which is then clamped in the testing machine. The friction, extrusion, and kneading actions simulate real-world conditions, causing down or feathers to penetrate the fabric. The number of particles that drill through the fabric is recorded and used to evaluate the fabric’s down-proof properties.
Testing Steps
- Cut the sample according to the required dimensions and adjust it in a controlled atmosphere (EN 20139), measuring temperature and humidity as per EN 20187.
- Before testing, place the cushion inside a plastic bag to capture any particles that penetrate through the fabric.
- Secure the sample bag inside the clamping device of the tester, ensuring the flaps are positioned properly.
- Set the counter for 2700 revolutions, then start the apparatus. After 2700 revolutions (approximately 20 minutes), the machine will automatically stop.
- After testing, remove the cushion from the bag and count the particles inside the bag. If the combined number of particles inside the bag and those protruding from the cushion exceeds 50, stop counting.
