ASTM E111: Determination of Young’s Modulus, Tangent Modulus, and Chord Modulus

ASTM E111: How to Determine Young’s Modulus & Material Stiffness

What is ASTM E111?

ASTM E111 is an international test standard used to determine the Young’s modulus, tangent modulus, and chord modulus of structural materials. This test is essential for materials that exhibit elastic behavior and where creep effects are negligible during loading.

Why is ASTM E111 Important?

✅ Evaluates the stiffness and elasticity of materials.
✅ Measures modulus values crucial for engineering and structural applications.
✅ Used for metallic materials in tensile and compression tests.

Testing Equipment for ASTM E111

Grips Used in ASTM E111 Testing

1. Wedge Grips

  • Ideal for tensile testing of metals.
  • Self-tightening mechanism ensures firm specimen gripping.

2. Compression Platens

  • Used for compression testing to measure material strength.
  • Typically made from steel or aluminum and attach to UTM machines.

Extensometers for ASTM E111

To ensure high-accuracy strain measurements, electronic extensometers are used:

  • Required for low-strain values (e.g., modulus and yield strength).
  • Measures elongation for tensile and compression tests.

Recommended Universal Testing Machines (UTM) for ASTM E111

For ASTM E111 testing, we recommend UTM machines with a capacity of 5kN to 600kN, depending on material strength.

ASTM E111 Test Procedure

1️⃣ Prepare test samples according to ASTM E111 guidelines.
2️⃣ For tension tests: Secure the sample in wedge grips and clamp the extensometer.
3️⃣ For compression tests: Place the sample on compression platens and mount the deflectometer.
4️⃣ Start the test at a controlled speed to prevent thermal or creep effects.
5️⃣ Record stress-strain data throughout the test process.

Key Measurements in ASTM E111

📌 Young’s Modulus (E) – Measures material stiffness.
📌 Tangent Modulus – Describes non-linear stress-strain behavior.
📌 Chord Modulus – Determines elasticity over a specific strain range.
