Application
The Moisture Management Tester is designed to assess the dynamic liquid transport properties of textiles, including both knitted and woven fabrics. It measures the following:
- Absorption Rate: Time taken for the fabric’s inner and outer surfaces to absorb moisture.
- One-way Transportation Capability: The movement of liquid moisture from the fabric’s inner surface to its outer surface.
- Spreading / Drying Rate: Speed at which liquid moisture spreads across both the inner and outer surfaces of the fabric.
The tester can measure these specific indexes:
- Wetting Time (Top / Bottom) (WTT / WTB)
- Absorption Rate (Top / Bottom) (TAR / BAR)
- Maximum Wetted Radius (Top / Bottom) (MWRT / MWRB)
- Spreading Speed (Top / Bottom) (TSS / BSS)
- Accumulative One-Way Transport Capacity (R)
- Overall Moisture Management Capacity (OMMC)

Testing Method
Test Specification
The Moisture Management Tester evaluates the dynamic transfer performance of liquid water through textiles. This objective method measures how liquid water moves within knitted fabrics, woven fabrics, and nonwoven materials, making it suitable for quality control and research in functional fabrics and garment development. However, this method is not applicable to vapor water transport or fabrics such as coated, glued, or thick fabrics like wool.
Test Principle
During testing, the fabric sample is placed horizontally with its soaking surface in contact with liquid water. The water diffuses along the soaking surface, penetrates through the fabric, and spreads across the permeable surface. Using sensors in direct contact with the fabric, the tester tracks the liquid’s dynamic transfer and calculates key performance indicators to assess the fabric’s moisture absorption, drying, and sweating performance.
Terminology Definition
- Absorption Speed: The average absorption rate of the liquid on both the upper and lower surfaces of the fabric during the test.
- Lower Surface: The side of the fabric facing the lower sensor during the test. It typically refers to the outer surface of the fabric or garment.
- Maximum Wetting Radius: The greatest radius of the wetted area after a specified time, marking when the fabric first starts to soak.
- Overall Moisture Management Capability (OMMC): A comprehensive measure of the liquid’s dynamic transfer through the fabric, combining the water absorption rate, accumulative one-way transport capacity, and spreading speed.
- Diffusion Velocity: The rate at which the liquid spreads on the fabric surface until it reaches its maximum wetted area.
- Wetting Time: The time taken for the fabric to completely wet on both the upper and lower surfaces, measured from the start of the test.
