ASTM D7003: Strip Tensile Strength Testing of Reinforced Geomembranes

ASTM D7003: Strip Tensile Strength Testing of Reinforced Geomembranes

What is ASTM D7003?

ASTM D7003 is a widely used test standard designed to measure the strip tensile strength and elongation of reinforced geomembranes. This test is crucial in evaluating the strength of geomembranes used in industries like geotechnical engineering, environmental protection, and water management.

This method is similar to ASTM D5035 but is specifically tailored for reinforced geomembranes, rather than textile fabrics.

Key Features of ASTM D7003

✅ Measures tensile strength and elongation of reinforced geomembranes.
✅ Evaluates full contribution of reinforcement in the material.
✅ Conducted parallel to the reinforcement direction for accurate results.
✅ Index test only – not intended for design purposes.

Grips Used in ASTM D7003 Testing

1. Mechanical Vise Grips

  • Manual, screw-action grips for affordable and effective specimen holding.
  • Adjustable jaw faces accommodate different material thicknesses.

2. Pneumatic Grips

  • Ideal for ASTM D7003 testing due to adjustable jaw face alignment.
  • Ensures even gripping of reinforced geomembrane samples.

Recommended Universal Testing Machines (UTM) for ASTM D7003

For ASTM D7003 testing, we recommend UTM machines with a capacity of 50N to 20kN, depending on material strength.

1. VEW 220E – Desktop Servo Testing Machine

✅ High accuracy and sensitivity for load and displacement measurements.
✅ Compact single-space structure – perfect for lightweight materials.
✅ Measures stress, strain, tensile strength, and elongation.

Applications:
🔹 Rubber, plastics, films, textiles, cables, composites, waterproof membranes, wood, and more.

2. VEW 2308 – Universal Testing Machine

✅ Computer-controlled with precision motor for accurate testing.
✅ Performs tensile, compression, bending, shear, and peeling tests.
✅ Suitable for rubber, plastic, leather, aerospace materials, metals, and more.

ASTM D7003 Test Procedure

1️⃣ Prepare at least five specimens according to ASTM D7003, ensuring fiber reinforcement alignment.
2️⃣ Condition the specimens in a standard atmosphere before testing.
3️⃣ Secure the specimen in the grips with a 3-inch grip separation.
4️⃣ Apply a tensile force at a crosshead speed of 12 inches/minute until the sample breaks.

Key Measurements in ASTM D7003

📌 Peak Strength – Maximum tensile force before failure.
📌 Elongation at Peak Strength (%) – Material stretch before breaking.
