What is ASTM D6252?
ASTM D6252 is an international test standard that defines a position-controlled 90° peel test to measure the adhesion strength of pressure-sensitive label stock to a standard steel substrate or other surfaces.
Why is ASTM D6252 Important?
This test helps manufacturers evaluate bond strength, ensuring that labels:
✔ Stay securely attached to packaging.
✔ Resist peeling under normal use conditions.
✔ Maintain product identification and branding integrity.
Poor adhesion can result in torn or missing labels, leading to product identification issues and reduced packaging appeal.
Testing Setup for ASTM D6252
Test Specimen
Specimen Shape:
Must be die-cut according to ASTM specifications using a dumbbell or dogbone cutter.
Cutting Precision:
The dumbbell cutter should be calibrated using a VMS machine for accuracy.
Grips & Fixtures
Different grip options ensure secure specimen holding during testing:
✅ Mechanical Vise Grips –
Versatile grips suitable for plastics, metals, fabrics, films, and ceramics.
✅ Screw-Action Grips –
Adjustable, dual-acting jaw faces to accommodate different specimen thicknesses.
✅ 90° Peel Fixture –
Provides a steady sliding table movement, ensuring a constant peel angle for accurate adhesion strength measurement.
Recommended Universal Testing Machines (UTM)
For ASTM D6252 testing, we recommend UTM machines with a capacity of 2kN to 20kN, depending on the label material’s strength.
VEW 2307 – Compact Desktop UTM
✔ Small, space-saving design.
✔ Computer-controlled with automatic report generation.
✔ Ideal for quality control in production lines.
VEW 2308 – High-Precision UTM
✔ Five-speed electronic motor for controlled testing.
✔ Supports tensile, compression, shear, peeling, and tearing tests.
✔ Suitable for rubber, plastics, leather, fabric, aerospace, and automotive materials.
ASTM D6252 Test Procedure
1️⃣ Select appropriate equipment based on label stock and substrate.
2️⃣ Clean and dry the test panel as per ASTM guidelines.
3️⃣ Prepare and condition the adhesive specimens following ASTM D6252.
4️⃣ Use a die cutter and sample roller to create properly sized specimens.
5️⃣ Attach the adhesive specimen onto the test plate or fixture.
6️⃣ Secure the free end into the upper grip of the adhesion tester.
7️⃣ Perform a 90° peel test at the standard separation speed.
8️⃣ Record the peel force required to remove the label.
