ISO 15490 Test Standard

ISO 15490 is an international test standard designed for determining the tensile strength of monolithic advanced ceramics under uniaxial loading at room temperature.

Ceramics possess a high elastic modulus and maintain consistent performance at elevated temperatures. This makes them highly resistant to wear and corrosion.

Today, ISO standards are widely used by both corporate and government bodies. In Malaysia, many industries adopt the ISO 15490 standard in their operations.

Generally, the ISO 15490 test standard measures the strength and deformation of materials under uniaxial tensile stress. This information is valuable for material comparisons, quality control, structural design, and acceptance testing for commercial shipments.

Extensometers for ISO 15490

This test does not require an extensometer, as its primary purpose is to determine the tensile strength of the material rather than measure elongation displacement.

Type of UTM Machine for ISO 15490

For ISO 15490 testing, we recommend using UTM machines with a capacity of 5kN-100kN, depending on the material strength. A dual-column floor-type machine is also recommended.

1. VEW 2308

2. VEW 2302

The VEW 2302 Computer Servo Type Universal Testing Machine combines electronic technology and mechanical transmission to provide accurate load speeds and a wide force measurement range. It offers high precision and sensitivity for load and displacement measurement and control.

Main Functions:

  • Suitable for testing metallic and non-metallic materials in tension, compression, bending, shear, peel, tear, and two-point extensions.
  • Applicable materials include rubber, plastic, wire and cable, optical fiber, safety belts, composite materials, waterproof membranes, steel, copper, profiles, springs, and stainless steel.

Test Procedure for ISO 15490

  1. Prepare the specimens as described in the method.
  2. Place the specimen into the grips.
  3. Clamp the specimen at the top grip first, then carefully clamp it into the bottom grip.
  4. Zero all testing machine settings before starting the test.
  5. Begin the test by clicking the start button on the software.
  6. End the test after the specimen breaks (rupture).
